2.2 Sustainable Seychelles
The SSTL is a sustainable tourism management programme designed specifically for use in the Seychelles. As an initiative of the Government of Seychelles and recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, it is a voluntary and user-friendly certification programme aimed at promoting more efficient and sustainable business practices, applicable to hotels of all sizes. The label was launched in 2011, and both Constance Lemuria, Seychelles, and Constance Ephelia, Seychelles, are among the 22 establishments certified under the programme, reflecting our commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability performance. The SSTL was rebranded as ‘Sustainable Seychelles’ in October 2023. In recognition of over a decade of consistent environmental performance, Constance Ephelia, Seychelles, became the first resort in the country to receive the prestigious Sustainable Seychelles Platinum Award, the highest sustainable tourism accolade awarded by the Seychelles Tourism Department.
2. SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBLE SOURCING AND PROCUREMENT 2.1 The Green Globe Certification Programme
CHSL embarked on the Green Globe certification programme in 2013 to strengthen the recognition of its environmental sustainability credentials. The year 2018 marked a turning point, as all six resorts located across the Indian Ocean were awarded the prestigious Green Globe Gold Certification. In 2024, we achieved top-tier recognition within the Green Globe Certification Programme, with an average score of 93%, demonstrating our rigorous commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability performance. The origins of the Green Globe organisation can be traced back to the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992, where 182 heads of state endorsed the Agenda 21 principles of sustainable development. Two years later, the Green Globe membership programme was established. The Green Globe brand represents leading standards in sustainable practices within the travel and tourism sector and provides certification, training and marketing services in more than 83 countries. Today, the Green Globe Certification is recognised as one of the world’s longest-running global certification programmes for sustainable travel and tourism.
