Legends Tour: Bjørn confirms legend status in Mauritius
Legends Tour: James Kingston wins annual standings Of Luke Medek - December 12, 2022
While James Kingston secured victory in the season standings, Thomas Bjørn spectacularly won his second Legends Tour title in Mauritius.
In the frst round of the MCB Tour Championship in Mauritius, ex- Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjørn was four strokes behind leader and defending champion Jarmo Sandelin of Sweden after opening with a round of 68. But with three birdies on the last four holes of his Friday round, Bjørn showed he had found his form. He caught up over the next 36 holes, then overtook the feld and fnally set himself apart.
In the second round, he played seven birdies and two eagles for a score of 61, which would have set a new course record had it not been for "Betterlegen". With another birdie on the frst hole of the fnal round, he extended his lead and kept his pursuers at bay as best he could on Sunday. With a round of 67 and a total of 20-under (196 strokes over 54 holes), he secured the win by seven strokes ahead of England's Simon Brown and South Africa's James Kingston , while Clark Dennis and Adilson Da Silva shared fourth place .
Afterwards, Bjørn revealed that despite a four-stroke lead, he was a bit nervous going into the last round.
"A BIG LEAD IS WEIRD BECAUSE YOU SIMPLY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT,"
said Thomas Bjorn.
The Dane was referring to his previous lead of at least four shots at the 2014 BMW PGA Championship and the 2005 European Open, both of which he gambled away in the end.
He explained that he had come up with a plan to avoid making the same mistake again. "I was sitting in my hotel room this morning thinking about it," he said. "I decided to set a score and fgured if someone beats it, there's nothing I can do about it. The target was 20 under par and I am very happy that I achieved that result. I avoided mistakes, I avoided bogeys and I avoided encouraging the feld.”
Bjørn was also amazed at how well the Legend Course ( Constance Hotels & Resorts ) suited him. "I didn't have high expectations when I came here, but the golf course was absolutely what I had in mind," he said. “I was also able to take full advantage of the par 5s. All in all, it was just a great week and I am very satisfed.”
